"Fantastic idea, terrible execution. To be absolutely honest, the overall experience was fine. I had a lovely time. However, in terms of service, that part appears to be almost non-existent in my experience."

Starting with communicating with Mia via email. I made contact via email asking about wines and confirming that we were still able to bring our pet. She answered just fine to this email. Later, I sent a second email enquiring about wine tasting and the costs. This email was ignored. I had to send a third email to get a response. This time they did not even bother to respond in the language I made the enquiry in. She switched to Afrikaans for no reason at all. Then the actual stay - we made contact with Gerrie 30 minutes prior to arrange collection of the keys. We were told to meet him at the restaurant. We arrived, met with Gerrie, exchanged greetings and handshakes. I, in passing interest, asked what made them decide to set up a glamping site. This question appeared to irritate Gerrie and he shrugged with a huff and stated that they were building another 2 sites, not even addressing the initial question. Anyways, he stood there with a blank stare and I was forced to break the silence by asking "So what now?". To which he responded, "Follow me." We followed down the road and arrived at the site. The premises were extremely hot inside. Even the cutlery and glasses were so hot they could not be easily handled with a naked hand (yes, that hot). Gerrie had brought with him 2 wireless solar rechargeable fans. He placed them on the desk. That was it. Again, to break the silence and awkward interaction, I asked if there was anything I needed to know. Gerrie responded, "Yes, the hot water was gas and to turn the hot water on first before the cold." That was the end of our interaction; he left by saying if we needed anything to contact him, not even an "enjoy your stay". Okay, so this interaction was a little off, but then we discovered signage that was in complete contradiction of what we found at the place. 1. A sign saying no smoking - despite ashtrays strewn throughout the property (not even properly cleaned, clearly recently used). 2. A second sign stating no open fires outside during summer, yet they have a built open fire pit as part of the feature of the premises, not to mention the hot tub that would require transfer of embers. Speaking of the hot tub, the water was filthy, filled with insects, muck, and algae. Green in colour and slimy to the touch. No clear instruction was given on how to drain or refill with fresh clean water. As mentioned earlier, the premises inside was extremely hot, so we turned on the fans to try to cool down the glamp. They worked for a full 35 seconds before dying. Again, no instruction on how to recharge. Luckily, upon digging around, we found the little solar panels intended for the fans. We connected them and set the fans in the sun to charge. One of the fan's connectors was broken/loose, and we had to struggle and figure out a way to connect it. That night at about 9pm, the batteries of the solar system gave up the ghost, and we were without electricity for the entirety of the night, meaning fridges, lights, and water were no longer options. Oh, and the fans that we "charged" still did not charge or function properly. The following morning, I contacted Gerrie about the electricity. He arrived a short while later and connected a generator. We had electricity, this time at the expense of silence. Now that we had water, I decided to have a nice morning shower. The shower is a slipping health hazard trap just itching to hurt somebody. Okay, with all that said, every other experience was magical. Sunsets were fantastic, bird life around the site is amazing, the peacefulness was exactly what I was looking for. We were even graced with a troop of baboons making the routine way to the watering hole. What a lovely experience. Final morning - check-out morning. I tried to contact Gerrie to find out what he needed from us before we left. He did not even bother to answer his phone on this day; I was forced to contact Mia to get the details. So overall, I loved the place because of what I and my partner made of it, but in terms of service, good God. The troop of baboons provided us with better service. If you don't love what you do, then don't do it at all. Is it too much to ask for service with a smile? To get a little information without feeling like it's a chore? Hell, I was not even sure if the water was even drinkable.

"Secluded which is exactly what we were after."

It is really lovely, location and privacy is sublime, but if I have to nitpick, there are a few "issues" that need to be resolved and they are things that I read in a few reviews, so I would think that Meerhof should hopefully attend to them so it makes it that more pleasant for the next people. The hot tub and fire place is inside which is fabulous, but the chimneys on both are lower than the tent roof so the smoke does not draw properly. Meerhof are aware of it as my husband asked if it is drawing properly (we read the reviews that stated it didn't) and the response was "sometimes, it draws 50/50". When it is raining and absolutely freezing, you don't want to have to start opening the windows and doors so the smoke starts flowing out, but we had no choice and that made the whole place ice cold when we were literally trying to make it warm. The water pressure was terrible, you either froze or burnt yourself (another point we read in reviews). We turned the heat and pressure on the gas outside to low, that helped regulate the water a little so at least we didn't have to jump in and out that much as we did on the first night. The gas for the cooker was empty, we only discovered that on the first night at 20h00, we didn't want to hassle anyone that time of night so that was a little pain as we had to relight a fire to cook and got smoked out again. We told them in the morning and it was sorted out no problem at all, but that is a detail that should have been looked at before we arrived. On the whole it was great and we will go back for sure but hopefully the chimneys get sorted and they find a solution for the water in the shower.
